Science

The Science Curriculum Area aims to equip all students with skills they can use in the study of Science after their time at The Academy as well as in life in general. We teach Science through practical work and real-life situations wherever possible. We have recently introduced both triple Science at GCSE and a new Key Stage Five Forensic Science course and are looking for new ways to inspire and engage our students in Science.

Year 7

"Infinity and Beyond" links Science with Technology. Through this exciting link students are exposed to the following projects:

  1. Passport: In Passport students learn the basic skills required for the rest of the year such as how to use equipment like Bunsen burners and how to conduct a scientific investigation.
  2. Silence of the Sheppard: After the Principle is murdered students use forensic science skills to solve the crime!
  3. The Race to Mars: Students investigate the science behind rockets and learn about the forces involved in space travel. They explore the solar system and design and make 'space food' for a journey to Mars.
  4. The Apprentice: Just like the TV show the students are encouraged to design and make a range of products to sell to the public. They learn about the science behind all sorts of everyday items from candles to perfumes and use the skills that they have learnt through the year to be successful.

Year 8

"Discovery and Exploration" links Science with PE. By focusing on the practical nature of both subjects students learn Science through the following units:

  1. Lifestyle: With a link to Health related fitness, students study how to have a lifestyle that allows their seven life processes to work at their best.
  2. Life: Badminton allows students to learn about their organs and organ systems as well as behaviour in living things.
  3. Bounce: Students use trampolining to investigate energy transfer. This leads on to a study of changing environment and sustainability.
  4. The Great Outdoors: Outdoor education is used to study rocks and basic chemistry.
  5. Star Wars: The Gym is the venue for a study of light and sound through real-life sporting situations.
  6. Action Reaction: Dance is used to teach students about particles.

In addition, Year 8 will have 1 pure Science lesson per week starting in September. This will be entirely practical and focused on honing students Science-based skills ready for the path they choose in Key stage Four.
