Science

The Science Curriculum Area aims to equip all students with skills they can use in the study of Science after their time at The Academy as well as in life in general. We teach Science through practical work and real-life situations wherever possible. This is an exciting year as we build on the successful introduction of both triple Science at GCSE and a new Key Stage Five Forensic Science course last year.

Key Stage Four now starts in year 9 for all students. There are four main routes students can take, all through the Edexcel exam board:

  • Triple award GCSE: Those students aiming at level 6 in Key Stage Three will be encouraged to take the triple Science GCSEs. This was a brand new course in 2009 and students will be awarded three separate science GCSEs at the end of it: Biology, Physics and Chemistry. This is an excellent preparation for any further Scientific study including A-level.
  • BTEC First Diploma in Applied Science: This course, worth the equivalent of FOUR GCSEs has proven to be very popular. After the certificate (see below) students learn their science skills through Forensic Science (The study of solving crime) and Science in The World Of Work (Where students learn about and visit local businesses. There are no exams and assessment is through a portfolio of work produced by the students.
  • Double award GCSE: This option will result in 2 GCSEs: Core Science and Additional Science. The course is practically based and will allow students to take most Science-based courses at a higher level including A level.
  • BTEC First Certificate in Applied Science. This is the first half of the BTEC diploma course and covers Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Once again, assessment is through a portfolio of evidence, not exams. This course results in the equivalent of 2 GCSEs.
Whichever course is followed, revision, improvement sessions and clubs are available for all students at various points throughout the year.
