An Half Day Introduction to the
Business, Administration and Finance Diploma

The Hereford Academy put on a half day introduction to the new Business, Administration and Finance Diploma on 1 April. Students from schools throughout Herefordshire were invited to come and learn more about the diploma and what it entailed.

Students started the morning by 'speed dating' with local businessmen and women trying to gain as much insight as they could into companies such as KS3.net, Wye Valley Life, Orphans Press, The Institute of Export, Severn Wye, Wyvern Business Systems, Herefordshire Council, The Reward Factory and Hicks Associates before the bell went after 3 minutes.

We then met and had an inspirational talk from Saburil Islam, an 18 year old entrepreneur who has already made his first £1million on the stock market and is continues to go from strength to strength writing books and TV programmes. Students found this fascinating with one commenting "If he can do it so can I".

After a break, students heard how the stock markets work and the impact they have on financial markets and our day to day lives. They finished off by learning about buying and selling imported and exported goods and services. One of the students said about the day "the world of business and finance is big even here in Herefordshire and I want to learn more about being a successful businessman".

Jane Morse, Director of Post-16 at The Hereford Academy, said of the day "It was huge success. It allowed local business to meet young people face to face and for them to impart their knowledge of the local workplace. It also gave the students an insight into the workplace and to briefly experience the 'sharp' end of business which certainly had them sitting up straighter in their chairs."
