Numeracy across the Curriculum

To raise awareness of numeracy across the curriculum, The Hereford Academy has embarked on a policy which enables staff to share a common understanding of numeracy by, for example, highlighting topics such as approaches to mental calculation, and the use of correct mathematical vocabulary and notation.

Whole school collaboration

Support is offered by the maths department to other subject departments by asking each department to consider:

  • What numeracy is used in their subject,
  • What numeracy skills they are confident in teaching,
  • Offering help and advice to enhance the numeracy aspect of their lessons.

Purpose

  • To raise the achievements of the students at The Hereford Academy
  • To set out a whole school approach to the development of numeracy skills.
  • To provide a framework which all curriculum areas can use when planning and writing programmes of study.
  • To ensure that all students have access to the curriculum.
  • To encourage students to appreciate the relevance and importance of numeracy in helping to understand not just their studies but everyday life.
  • To agree objectives, monitor developments and evaluate outcomes supported by different subject areas in the school.

Guidelines

  • All teachers are teachers of numeracy in that they will encourage and develop
  • Students' numeracy skills as they arise in their subject's activities.
  • Staff needs will be identified and training provided.
  • Student's achievements in numeracy skills will be recognised in assemblies and presentation evenings.
  • Cross-curricular activities to enhance numeracy skills will be encouraged.

Conclusion

All staff within the school has a responsibility for promoting and developing numeracy skills. Our whole-school approach and commitment should enhance the teaching and learning process.
