THA Student Council

The student council provides pupils a voice in improving the school and contributing to a wide range of development areas.

The group are part of a wider effort using the House and Rewards Systems to improve the visibility and impact of student leadership, working with the Interact Group and Year 10 House Captains.

Mr Webster currently meet students twice per half term during Monday PHSCE sessions. At present the meetings involve all selected students, one democratically elected representative per form group, although as the programme develops we may meet with more targeted groups to focus on specific development areas in the future.

Whilst there has been many requests for the group to focus on specific areas of academic development it has been important to balance this with providing opportunities for pupils to bring their own suggestions from form groups to ensure they are a voice of the wider student population. A potential summer uniform, and some additions to canteen menus are the two main areas students have raised to look into, with focus groups currently exploring options in each of these areas to present to SLT.

In line with the school-wide focus on attendance the student council are also currently assessing options for new rewards around attendance, designed to increase the importance placed on being in school and increase motivation in these areas. Ideas are being assessed to gain a student viewpoint to ensure they are relevant and practical.

To tie in with Teaching and Learning/QA focus, student voice are also being used to provide feedback on the current initiatives being developed through the staff Monday CPD sessions. This week students are completing surveys to assess the consistency and effectiveness of the use of questioning and feedback in lessons which are being focused upon by SLT, to provide invaluable insight as to the effectiveness of such schemes and ideas for future development.

To support the development of the house and rewards systems the students are also taking part in a trial of the student and parent awhich can be set-up on the Class Charts software. This programme allows both to monitor progress, behaviour and attendance in real time to gain an accurate and up to date snapshot of their learning. Following the trial and feedback to follow, this will then be rolled out to all students across the school using the information learned from the trial to maximise its effectiveness.
